Joining Lerer Hippeau to dive deeper into New York’s startup scene

By: Caitlin Strandberg

I couldn’t be more excited to join Lerer Hippeau as a Principal on the investment team, focusing on seed stage investments here in New York and on the west coast. I’m thrilled to be able to work closely with Eric, Ken, Ben, Graham and the rest of the Lerer Hippeau team — and support a fantastic community of 250+ companies and more than 500 founders.

I joined the NYC tech ecosystem around the same time that Lerer Hippeau launched their first $8M fund in 2010. Over the last eight years, Lerer Hippeau has become the most active early-stage investor in NYC and supported many category-defining companies from the very first check, such as Casper, Glossier and Warby Parker. Now, with two new funds, a $122M early-stage fund (Fund VI) and a $60M Select II, I couldn’t be joining at a better time. I’m excited to identify and support the next generation of founders and do so in this city I love.

Over the years, I’ve “grown up” in the NYC startup ecosystem and watched it mature. I cut my teeth at two fantastic NYC startups — Behance (acquired by Adobe) and LearnVest (acquired by NorthWestern Mutual) — and tackled difficult problems with world-class teams and leaders. I then switched sides of the table, as an Associate at Flybridge Capital Partners and then, most recently, as a Vice President at FirstMark Capital, where I joined after earning my MBA from Harvard Business School. As an investor, I often visited the growing Cornell Tech campus on Roosevelt Island — an initiative that started when I was a student at Cornell.

These years of experience have given me valuable insight into the inner workings of a company and how the right guidance, leadership, partnerships (and capital) can make a positive impact on the trajectory of any business and community.

I can’t wait to build meaningful relationships with present and future founders and work to personally add to Lerer Hippeau’s outstanding reputation for having hands-on and engaged investors and advisors.

I’ll be focusing on sourcing new investments, due diligence, and supporting Lerer Hippeau’s platform and current crop of portfolio companies. I’m excited to work closely with our founders as they build the next generation of category-defining companies. I am here to help.

One of the best parts of this job is meeting incredible people along the way. Have a company you think I should see? If you know a founder I should meet, feel free to send her or him my way: or @strandby.
