Meet Kangaroo, the latest addition to Lerer Hippeau’s portfolio.

HQ: New York City

Cofounders: Maximus Yaney, Dhruv Garg, James Xu, and Victor Meng

The problem: Navigating home security options can easily take owners and renters down a research and review rabbit hole. And, once there, they’re likely to find a range of high-price systems with add-on options, strict contracts, and extra fees that could easily confuse and overwhelm. It’s no wonder that more than 100 million homes in the United States lack a security system.

Kangaroo’s solution: Kangaroo provides a more accessible and affordable solution for home security. The modular system features a hub-less motion sensor synced with WiFi, app-paired controls, and flexible monitoring plans for free or a low annual cost. Add to that a personable brand and easy-to-use products and Kangaroo offers the most approachable solution to secure your home.

Origin story: With wide-ranging experience touching consumer products and hardware, the Kangaroo team has worked together in different functions and capacities across their collective careers. One key experience came from their time at Mohawk Group, where they built hardware products to better meet consumers’ needs. Discovering a gap for a high-performing, low-cost home security solution, they created Kangaroo.

Why we’re betting on it: The vast majority of homes in the U.S. are not protected by at-home security systems, which results in pricey insurance claims like fire, flood, and, to a lesser extent, theft. Kangaroo can reach nearly all homes given its flexible price point. Built by a team of hardware veterans with deep expertise in developing and launching consumer products and brands, we believe the Kangaroo team is well-positioned to offer home security for everyone.

Our take: Personal security, be it with data or in the physical world, is becoming increasingly important without necessarily becoming more accessible. We’ve seen this trend upended in the digital landscape with our companies Rubica and Casa. But for years the technology that powers Kangaroo wasn’t an option for other physical security systems. New developments, like improved IoT chips and modules, are leading the way for more affordable and accessible products. As the underlying infrastructure for consumer products becomes less expensive, so do the products themselves— allowing for Kangaroo to reach homes everywhere.
