Please welcome Plus One Robotics, the answer to shorter delivery times
HQ: San Antonio, Texas
Founders: Erik Nieves, Shaun Edwards, and Paul Hvass
The problem: High employee turnover, risks of repetitive motion, and increasing demand for shorter delivery times have signaled a need for fulfillment and parcel shipping centers to automate their processes to be faster and more efficient.
Plus One’s solution: The robotics company combines advanced 3D image processing and machine learning to automate the tedious picking process to be as fast or faster than humans. Its computer vision system, which sits on top of third-party hardware, enables the intelligent perception and movement of objects within any warehouse.
Origin story: Erik Nieves’ understanding of the needs surrounding industrial automation comes from his years spent at industrial robotics company Yaskawa. Shaun and Paul built the most-used open source software platform in industrial robotics, ROS-Industrial, while at SwRI. They teamed up to build the fulfillment software of the future with Plus One.
Why we’re betting on it: Plus One is the answer to persistent problems in parcel shipping and fulfillment that will only be exacerbated by increased online ordering and the growing need to ship items quickly. The company is offering the necessary technology to allow businesses to automate and scale operations as they see a rise in volume due to more individual orders and shipping-related flash deals.
Our take: The labor force for fulfillment and parcel shipping has high churn and burnout rates. After viable workers in the surrounding area have left the company, it’s hard to find new talent. Plus One allows businesses to be more flexible in where they start while allowing stakeholders to better utilize human talent by letting robots do the simple tasks. As a result, Plus One can free up staff for higher priority responsibilities, while mitigating the potential medical risks of repetitive motions. The need for Plus One’s technology will only grow as labor availability shrinks and the number of fulfillment centers grows.
